We starten het nieuwe jaar met geweldig nieuws! Begin oktober 2023 startten we de campagne ‘Den Bosch bontvrij!’ Doelstelling van de campagne was ervoor te zorgen dat er in het centrum van ’s-Hertogenbosch geen echt bont meer verkocht wordt, vanwege het enorme dierenleed dat schuil gaat achter de bontindustrie. Na drie maanden, drie heftige protesten in de binnenstad en meerdere gesprekken, brieven en e-mails met ondernemers kunnen we nu stellen dat er geen nieuw bont meer wordt verkocht in het centrum van Den Bosch. 

In september 2023 begonnen we met een grondig onderzoek waarbij (zowel online als in fysieke winkels) is gecheckt op de verkoop van echt bont. Aangezien het thema ‘bont’ al veel onder de aandacht is geweest in negatieve zin, was er dit seizoen aanzienlijk minder bont aanwezig dan voorheen. In twee winkels troffen we het echter nog aan, te weten Berkeley Menswear (Visstraat) en Joris Lammers Luxury Menswear (Verwersstraat). Deze constatering heeft geleid tot behoorlijke frictie tussen enerzijds de winkeleigenaren met commerciële belangen en anderzijds ons als stem voor de dieren.

Berkeley Menswear heeft dan ook in eerste instantie de aanwezigheid van bont ontkend. Aangezien de jassen van het merk Peuterey met rex konijnen bontkraag zowel in de winkel als online aanwezig zijn hield dat echter niet lang stand. Bij Joris Lammers heeft men in eerste instantie de aanwezigheid van echt bont in de winkel meteen erkend, het hing immers in de winkelrekken. 

Op 1 oktober '23 hebben de eerste protesten in de stad plaatsgevonden. Zowel bij Berkeley als bij Joris Lammers stonden we voor de winkeldeur met spandoeken en een megafoon waarmee we de stem van de dieren luid en duidelijk hebben laten horen. Met meerdere mensen schreeuwden we leuzen als ‘Wat willen wij? Den Bosch bontvrij!’ en ‘There’s no excuse for animal abuse!’. Tussendoor gaven we uitleg over dierenleed door bont door de megafoon. Een aanzienlijk deel van het stadscentrum heeft van deze acties kunnen meegenieten. Van voorbijgangers ontvingen we veel bemoediging en duimen omhoog, maar bij de betreffende winkeleigenaren leidde het tot grote consternatie. Bij Joris Lammers dook men zelfs in de ontkenning, geheel tegen hun eerdere openheid in, om volgende protesten te voorkomen.

Na drie maanden en drie protesten is het dan toch gelukt om beide winkels te doen stoppen met de verkoop van echt bont. Door middel van meerdere brieven en emails hielden we tussen de protesten door steeds contact met de winkeleigenaren. 

Uiteindelijk ontvingen we van beide winkeleigenaren een ondubbelzinnige schriftelijke verklaring van het feit dat men definitief afziet van de verkoop van bont. Berkeley verkoopt momenteel de oude voorraad, maar koopt het niet meer in voor de herfst/winter collectie ’24-’25. We hebben beide ondernemers namens de dieren hartelijk bedankt voor hun diervriendelijke besluit. Overigens hebben we vanaf het eerste moment benadrukt dat onze protesten geenszins tegen hen als persoon of onderneming gericht zijn, enkel tegen het bont. Bont, dat overduidelijk veel en onnodig dierenleed veroorzaakt en niet meer van deze tijd is.

Tijdens de acties in de stad werd ook het winkelend publiek in het centrum geïnformeerd over het dierenleed achter de bontindustrie. Hierbij hebben we informatie verstrekt over het feit dat imitatiebont vaak foutief wordt gelabeld. Echt bont is tegenwoordig namelijk vaak goedkoper in productie dan imitatiebont. Vele bontkragen van voorbijgangers zijn dit seizoen dan ook ter plekke door ons getest op echtheid. 

We sluiten de campagne voor nu af wegens succes. Echter het is een momentopname en we blijven de situatie dan ook in de gaten houden. Mochten we opnieuw echt bont aantreffen (tips zijn altijd welkom) zullen we opnieuw in actie komen voor de dieren. Daarnaast zijn we altijd in de wetenschap dat er nog veel meer dierenleed gaande is, elke seconde, dag en nacht. De strijd voor de dieren gaat altijd door! 

12-01-24 Inner city Den Bosch fur-free (for now)

We're starting the new year with some great news! At the beginning of October 2023 we started the campaign 'Den Bosch fur free!' The objective of the campaign was to ensure that real fur is no longer sold in the center of 's-Hertogenbosch, because the enormous animal suffering that hides behind the fur industry. After three months, three violent protests in the city center and several conversations, letters and emails with entrepreneurs, we can now say that new fur is no longer sold in the center of Den Bosch. 

In September 2023, we started an in-depth investigation that checks (both online and in physical stores) for the sale of real fur. Since the theme of 'fur' has received a lot of attention in a negative sense, there was considerably less fur present this season than before. However, we still found it in two stores, namely Berkeley Menswear (Visstraat) and Joris Lammers Luxury Menswear (Verwersstraat). This observation has led to considerable friction between the store owners with commercial interests on the one hand and us as a voice for the animals on the other.

Berkeley Menswear initially denied the presence of fur. However, since the coats of the Peuterey brand with rex rabbit fur collar were available both in stores and online, this did not last long. At Joris Lammers, the presence of real fur in the store was initially immediately recognized, as it was on the store shelves. 

The first protests took place in the city on October 1, '23. At both Berkeley and Joris Lammers we stood in front of the shop door with banners and a megaphone with which we made the animals' voices heard loud and clear. Several people shouted slogans like 'What do we want? Den Bosch fur-free!' and 'There is no excuse for animal abuse!'. In between we gave an explanation about animal suffering due to fur through the megaphone. A significant part of the city center was able to benefit from these actions. We receive a lot of encouragement and thumbs up from passers-by, but it causes great consternation among the shop owners in question. At Joris Lammers they even went into denial, completely against their monthly openness, to prevent subsequent protests.

After three months and three protests, both stores managed to stop selling real fur. We kept in touch with the store owners through several letters and emails between the protests. 

Ultimately, we received an unequivocal written statement from both store owners stating that they had definitively renounced the sale of fur. Berkeley is currently selling the old stock, but is no longer purchasing it for the autumn/winter collection '24-'25. We thanked both entrepreneurs on behalf of the animals for their animal-friendly decision. Moreover, we have emphasized from the very beginning that our protests are in no way directed against them as a person or company, only against fur. Fur, which clearly causes a lot of unnecessary animal suffering and is outdated.

During the actions in the city, shoppers in the center were also informed about the animal suffering behind the fur industry. We have provided information about the fact that faux fur is often incorrectly labeled. Nowadays, real fur is often cheaper to produce than imitation fur. Many passers-by's fur collars have been tested on site by us this season for authenticity. 

We are closing the campaign for now due to success. However, it is a snapshot and we will continue to monitor the situation. If we find real fur again (tips are always welcome) we will take action again for the animals. In addition, we are always aware that there is much more animal suffering going on, every second, day and night. The fight for the animals always continues!
